Weaving a Biography. The tapestries in honour of Cosimo I

Events in Florence: from June 6 to September 29, 2019

This year Florence celebrates five hundred years since the birth of Cosimo I de 'Medici, the first Grand Duke of the city, with some initiatives entirely devoted to him. One of these is the exhibition Weaving a Biography. The tapestries in honor of Cosimo I, set up from June 6th to September 29th 2019 at Palazzo Pitti. It is definitely worth a visit.

The figure of Cosimo I de 'Medici is sometimes forgotten, despite he has played an extremely important role, bringing wealth and honour to the city. The exhibition celebrating the main successes of his government, housed in the Sala Bianca and in the Sala delle Nicchie of Palazzo Pitti, is a true journey back in time. The Stories of Cosimo I, represented in refined tapestries created for the Sala di Saturno, begin from the rise to power in 1537 and close with the conferring of the crown of Tuscany on Joanna of Austria, wife of the heir of Cosimo I. The other events show the power of the Grand Duke over Italy in 1500, with the conquest of Siena and the renovation of Pisa, the journey to Rome for negotiations with the Pope and the support to the king of France fighting against heretics. Entrance to the exhibition is included in the entrance tickets for the Palazzo Pitti museums.
