Piazza della Signoria 1

Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. It got its name from Palazzo della Signoria, more commonly called Palazzo Vecchio, the majestic building that lies in the center of the square. It is one focal point of the history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city hosting everyday thousands of tourists.

The square is surrounded by other important palaces and structures like the Loggia dei Lanzi, the wanderful structure that covers some statues of Cellini, Giambologna and Fedi, the Uffizi Gallery, the most prominent museum in Florence, the Palace of the Tribunale della Mercanzia (1359) and the Palazzo Uguccioni (1550, with a facade attributed to Raphael, who however died thirty years before its construction).

Recently Gucci opened a 1,715 square metre museum charting its 90-year history in Palazzo della Mercanzia overlooking the Piazza della Signoria.

Piazza della Signoria is just around the corner, you can enjoy a walk and a hot chocolate in the most renowned chocolaterie of Florence, Rivoire.
